Budget Storage
After choosing the right storage facility for your needs, packing the unit correctly is the next critical step. Use these tips to keep your belongings safe and damage-free during their stay.
Here is what we have learned over decades of running this facility — read these before you load the truck.
Decide whether the items you are storing will be better protected in boxes, totes, or other containers. You may need to purchase specialized boxes and packing supplies to protect them during the move and while they are stowed away.
Thoroughly clean, disinfect, and dry refrigerators, freezers, stoves, and other appliances. Appliances with doors can be stored with the door slightly open, and some can be stacked on top of each other.
Be sure to clean and dry all electrical equipment before storing it in your unit.
Retard rust by wiping down all metal surfaces before storing. A few drops of machine oil lightly coated on these items will help prevent rust and deterioration inside the storage unit.
Pack all books, files, and documents flat. Use bubble wrap or newspaper to fill any empty space in the boxes or totes.
Store clothing on hangers before folding into cartons. Make sure all drapes, curtains, linens, and clothing are washed and dried (or dry cleaned) before storage to avoid attracting pests.
Use bubble wrap and other packing materials for dishes and glassware. Pack similar items together and fill empty spaces with packing peanuts, bubble wrap, or newspaper.
Disassemble furniture and place the pieces on a corrugated cardboard mat or plastic sheet before placing them on a pallet.
Stack lightweight chairs seat-to-seat, but avoid stacking other types of furniture on top of each other. Cover all upholstery with dust covers.
Wrap lamp bases in padding and store the lamp shade and base separately.
Holiday decorations can be stored in their original cartons. Wrap glass ornaments and other delicate items in bubble wrap or newspaper before placing them in boxes or totes.
CDs, tapes, records, and other music items can be stored in boxes or airtight cartons to prevent damage.
Cover computer screens and large television screens with dust covers and wrap them in bubble wrap if you are storing them next to furniture or other equipment.
Even though you alone control access to your storage space, the following items cannot be stored in your unit at any time:
No pets, livestock, or any living creature.
No food, plants, or anything that will spoil.
No open or sealed liquids stored loose in the unit.
No fireworks, ammunition, or explosive materials.
No gasoline, propane, paint thinner, or similar fuels.
No chemicals, pesticides, or any hazardous materials.
Anything that requires a controlled environment (these are exterior drive-up units).
